Gozo is actually a small island just across the water from Malta in the Mediterranean. To reach it we had to fly to Malta, took one of the bus shuttle services to the port of Cirkewwa and afterwards took the Gozo ferry to the island. The ferry whilst visiting (2010) was about 4 euros for every passenger and about 13 euros for each car including the driver
If you happen to be familiar with Spain or France with all the most recent conveniences then Gozo is certainly not for you as it feels that the island is around 10 years behind these countries. Not always a bad thing if you are interested in a serene restful holiday vacation. You will never find any nightlife like you may find in mainland Malta we were not searching but there are areas like Ramla Bay Beach and even Marsalform if you are in search of something a tad bit more upbeat. We actually did have occasion to stay at one of the hotels in Gozo which appeared pleasant enough I regrettably fail to remember the name of it since we had been traumatised by roaches at our initial villa.
You would definitely need a car (they drive on the exact same side as the UK) if you happen to be staying on Gozo unless you are in to riding on bus services. The buses are somewhat antiques from the 50s and they are highly ornamented.
We hired a villa in Gozo, just outside the village of Xaghra which was quiet, pretty much like the rest of the island besides the capital Victoria. As the island is small it is comparatively easy to drive out to one of the neighborhoods in the evening to get a meal. You will realize that the food is predominantly Italian so pasta and pizza are on most menus. We did discover a great little square in Xaghra which had a number of high quality restaurants that served fresh fish as well as other meat dishes. The food was not cheap here but Xlendi was great to visit if you had had an ample amount of pizza.
There is quite a lot to visit on Gozo with numerous bays such as Xlendi which is a small tourist resort on the south west coast. Gozo weather assures warm sea breezes and full on sunshine.
The Citadel in Victoria is really worth a visit. Gozo being predominantly catholic has churches that are lavishly decorated and most of the churches are lit at night. There are some interesting museums to visit as well some displaying the huge wealth of the Catholic Church in solid silver.
If you have some spare cash, the two excursions that I would suggest are the Seaplane that will take you on a picturesque flight around the islands and drop you off in Malta for the day. Be prepared to jostle for a window seat to be able to see the spectacular coast line. The plane flies fairly low so you can see a lot of detail.
The next excursion is to hire a boat for the day. We paid the extra and had the boat to ourselves which is great as the captain will take you where you want to go, we were provided with coffee as well as afternoon tea and cooked fresh lunch of fish which has been caught that morning. We stopped off at a number of bays and swam with the fish. This was a marvelous experience. The captain told us to leap in the water with our snorkels and then he fed the fish. We had countless fish all swimming around us rather like a huge aquarium.
